The difference comes down to height. Counter stools are typically designed for counters and kitchen islands around 90 cm high, while bar stools suit taller bar tables and counters closer to 105 cm. As a rule of thumb, leave around 25 to 30 cm between the seat and the underside of your counter so nobody ends up eating dinner with their knees at chin level.
Start by measuring the height of your kitchen counter or island, then subtract 25 to 30 cm to find the ideal seat height.
